Size - Does it Matter?

Just browsing the Search Engine Watch Blog and Danny Sullivan posted a pretty funny article about search engine database size and how the major SEs seem to think that anyone cares. The funny thing is that I had a conversation with my father on Saturday morning, where he was telling me about one of his good friend’s involvement in an entertainment industry internet play. But, the funny part came when my father said something about search engines and made a reference to Yahoo! Search having a “bigger database” of websites. I have to say that my jaw dropped for a few seconds. My dad can barely check email without breaking something on his computer. I cannot explain how many calls I have received from him or my mother where he is about 2 seconds away from blowing a gasket. Now he is telling me about the size of search engine databases?

Personally, I don’t give one crap about the size of Google or Yahoo’s index, just as long as they are returning relevant results. Interesting how the good ‘ol search engines announce these things in the summer when eveyone is playing on vacation and at the beach. That is, everyone except the SEO/SEM types…who really don’t care either. Anyway, you can check out the SE challenge for all of the details.
