Detecting Hidden Text

Why is it that human nature is to be greedy? Someone provides a free service or a community of people attempt to form a real “cooperative,” yet there is always someone who has to take advantage of the system. Today I was reading throught some of the morning’s posts over at the DP forums and I came across this one. Pretty classic. I don’t need to translate it to understand what is going on. Hopefully, this will be this guy’s indoctrination into the lifetime ban club. What a joker.

But, it is things like this that has had me thinking lately. With the introduction of the rel=”nofollow” attribute and the success of the coop network (in size), more and more people like Jamesisko will be trying to “pull one over.” Our link manager software does a number of things very well, and I think that detecting “black hat” techniques like hidden text is one that it should be able to tackle. I am going to put some pen to paper on this to see just how difficult and resource intensive it will be. We already are beta testing the rel=”nofollow” addition to the CS link manager, but I think that detecting any tom foolery inside containing divs would be an even better addition. More to come.
